UPDOs

Client: The HEEAT Lab, Duke School of Nursing
Agency: Hey Awesome Girl
Roles: Art Director, Animator

Objective:

Introduce the UPDOs program to prospective partners; Craft engaging visuals to illustrate the risks of HIV and benefits of preventative medications that tie into the cultural significance of beauty salons within the Black community.

Process:

The HEEAT Lab’s UPDOs Protective Styles is a salon-based intervention with researchers and local community members. The program partners with local salons to promote awareness, knowledge, and uptake of PrEP among Black women in the Southern United States.

The concept for this introductory video hinged on the rich culture surrounding Black hair. The salon is the center of an important social network, and we wanted to showcase the artistry and variety of hairstyles that converge in that space. Hair itself comes alive in this video, mirroring the thriving cultural space that inspired it.
